Australia Minerals and Mining Group

Australia Minerals and Mining Group (AMMG) is an exploration company that has a keen interest in a variety of bulk commodities and is focused very much on the ever-growing Chinese market. As managing director Ric Dawson explained, current commodities are iron ore and “a new product, which has been around for a long time: kaolin.” In fact, we spoke only a few days after an announcement (please see sidebar) of a rather exciting development for AMMG in the form of a tie-up with a Chinese company to produce alumina from the kaolin, of which the company has more than 150 million tonnes.

Buxton Resources

Zanthus can be described as a strange place. Located approximately 211 km east of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, Zanthus is not a town; it is an outpost on the Trans Australia Railway line. The name Zanthus is derived from the scientific name of the state’s floral emblem the Kangaroo Paw (Angiozanthos Flavidus). A wrecked train carriage left lying on the red soil is a vivid reminder of an accident that happened back in 1999. In the late 60’s, two pilots reported spotting a UFO in the area. Buxton Resources has found something far more down to earth than UFOs in Zanthus that’s no accident; it has struck magnetite and lots of it!

Powersmart Solar

Australia, with its hot, dry climate and sun-drenched expanses, is an ideal location for optimal solar power production. In winter months, most of the country boasts in excess of 4 kWh per square metre per day of insolation, with one northern region exceeding 6 kWh a day – greatly exceeding the average values in Europe, Russia and most of North America. Regrettably, full advantage has not been taken of this potential for solar energy production.

The challenge rare earth elements pose is during extraction, as they exist in low concentrations and are difficult to separate from one another.
